Former journalist Hussain Hassan was arrested without warning on Thursday evening, shortly before a planned protest in Male' calling for the protection of journalists.

Police also arrested another individual in connection with the incident.

The two men were taken into custody while waiting on Chaandhanee Magu, having not yet moved toward Majeedhee Magu as instructed by police. Witnesses said the arrests happened suddenly and without prior notice.

The detentions come a day after hundreds of people protested in the capital on Wednesday, calling for the safeguarding of journalists’ rights.
