According to statistics released by the Health Ministry, a total of 3,907 nurses are currently working in the Maldives, including 314 male nurses.

The statistics, shared by the Ministry in observance of International Nurses Day, revealed that of the 3,907 nurses working across healthcare facilities nationwide, 1,989 are based in the Greater Malé Area, while 1,918 are serving across the atolls.

The Ministry’s data further highlighted a significant gender imbalance within the profession, with female nurses comprising the overwhelming majority at 3,593, compared to only 314 male nurses.

The nursing workforce consists of 2,503 Maldivian nationals and 1,404 expatriate nurses.

As part of broader efforts to strengthen and expand nursing services, the government introduced a dedicated Nursing Framework in 2018. The initiative has contributed to notable improvements in career development opportunities and salary structures for nursing professionals.

Specialized training opportunities in areas such as cardiac care and neuro care have been introduced. Efforts have also been undertaken to reinforce professional standards and enhance the nursing licensing system.
