Motorcycle set ablaze in Sh. Milandhoo: Two suspects released from custody.
Two individuals arrested from Sh. Milandhoo on suspicion of setting ablaze a motorcycle have been released from custody.
The suspects, identified as a 27-year-old man and a 24-year-old man, were arrested late last month under a court warrant in connection with the arson. After initially remanding the suspects in custody, the court has ordered their release, citing that there were no longer sufficient grounds to justify their continued detention. Both individuals were released subject to conditions set forth by the court.
The incident is reported to have occurred near the Mangrove area along the Ring Road on the eastern side of Milandhoo. The suspects are accused of property damage, theft, and unauthorized use of property.
Under the Maldivian Penal Code, damage to property, theft, and unauthorized use of property are recognized as criminal offenses:
Theft: Under Article 210 of the Penal Code, it is an offense to take another person’s property without consent and with the intention of depriving the rightful owner of it. This provision also covers the acquisition of property through fraudulent means.
Damage to Property: Article 220 states that intentionally or negligently causing damage to another person’s property constitutes a criminal offense. Sentencing is determined based on the value of the property and the extent of the damage incurred.
Unauthorized Use of Property: Article 214 provides that the use of another person’s property, particularly vehicles, without the owner’s permission is unlawful, even in cases where there is no intention to permanently deprive the owner of the property.
Penalties for these offenses vary according to the severity and classification of the crime and are often categorized as Class 4 felonies or higher, depending on the circumstances involved.
