Fenaka Corporation has said it will re‑examine any electricity bills suspected to be incorrect, following widespread complaints that household bills in the atolls for the month of March were unusually high.

Last Ramadan, electricity bills were discounted and each household received a bill capped at MVR 400. However, some people have raised concerns on social media that the March bills were significantly higher than in previous months.

In a statement, Fenaka said it had followed the same procedures used in other months when taking meter readings and preparing last month’s bills. The company said no customer bills were issued in violation of laws or regulations.

Fenaka said it will assist customers if any bill appears to have a problem and further verification of readings is required.

The company also reminded customers to be mindful of electricity usage, noting that March, April and May are the hottest months of the year.

The National Meteorological Service has previously said March and April were the hottest months on record, and that this year’s peak heat will be in April.

STELCO provides electricity services in the Malé area. Both STELCO and Fenaka note that electricity consumption rises during hot periods, with increased use of air‑conditioners and fans leading to higher bills.
