The main opposition party, the MDP, has decided to hold the election for the chairmanship on June 12.
The opportunity to apply for the post of Chairman is open from Wednesday until May 2 at 2:00 pm.
Only those who have registered as members of the party until this Wednesday will be able to vote in the election.
Among the requirements for this post, candidates must meet all the qualifications required of a parliamentary candidate under Article 73 of the Constitution and Article 8 of the Parliamentary Elections Act, in addition to being a party member.
Applications should be submitted through Google Forms. The form must be accompanied by a criminal and debt record from the Department of Justice and a criminal record issued by the Maldives Correctional Service.
So far, former President Mohamed Nasheed, Galolhu South MP Meekail Ahmed Naseem and former MP Alhan Fahumy have expressed interest in the post.
They are now campaigning for the election.
The post of MDP Chairman became vacant following the resignation of former Economic Minister Fayyaz Ismail.
Therefore, the responsibilities of the post are now being temporarily taken over by Hanimaadhoo MP Abdul Ghafoor Moosa.
The MDP announced that polling will be held on Wednesday, June 12 from 2:30 pm to 8:00 pm.
