The nisab of property zakat has been increased to MVR 21,836.50, the Maldives Zakat House announced on Tuesday.
The nisab is the minimum threshold at which property zakat becomes obligatory on an individual’s wealth.
In its statement, the Zakat House said that under the Zakat Act, property zakat in the Maldives is calculated based on the price of silver. Accordingly, the nisab for cash holdings has been revised to MVR 21,836.50 effective Tuesday.
As property zakat is one of the pillars of Islam, the Zakat House reminded the public that 2.5 percent of eligible wealth must be paid in accordance with Shari’ah rules.
