Elections Commission (EC) has announced that runoffs will be conducted in five islands following a tie between candidates in the Local Council Elections and the Women's Development Committee (WDC) elections held on April 4.

According to the Commission, the decision is in accordance with the Local Council Elections Act and its accompanying regulations, which mandate a runoff in instances where multiple candidates receive an equal number of votes for a contested seat.

The EC has identified the five islands where the additional polling will take place as B. Dhonfanu, HA. Kelaa, HDh. Neykurendhoo, L. Maavah, and Fuvahmulah City.

The voting is scheduled to be held this coming Saturday, with polling stations open from 8:00am to 16:00pm.

The run-off for the Local Council Elections will specifically address the seat reserved for women on the Dhonfanu Island Council and the seat reserved for women in the Dhandimagu constituency of Fuvahmulah City.

Meanwhile, the runoff for the WDCs will involve the election of the President of the Kelaa WDC, as well as members for the committees in Neykurendhoo and Maavah.

In addition to the respective islands, polling stations will also be established in Malé City to facilitate voting for residents of these constituencies who are living in the capital.

The EC expects to announce the official results of these run-off elections by Sunday.
