Ahmed Siyam Mohamed, president of Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) and parliamentary representative for Meedhoo, made an emotional appeal on Wednesday, calling on the government to fulfill the needs of the people and help those in need.

In a visit to Dh. Bandidhoo on Wednesday, Siyam said that there are multiple people in the Maldives who are bedridden, helpless, and pleading for urgent assistance.

He said that he met a lot of people from Dh. Atoll who are unable to access Aasandha coverage for their treatment.

“Where’s all the money Aasandha is spending? Where’s it going to? Where are the rights that Aasandha needs to guarantee to our people? Of what use is Aasandha?” he asked.

Siyam expressed concern that the Aasandha scheme isn’t providing effective assistance, but is being misused in acts of widespread corruption.

“The person who awards the contract takes a commission. The person in the embassy takes a commission. The hospital manager takes a commission. The person who awards the contract takes a commission. With all this, a USD 50 bill becomes USD 500,” he said.

Siyam said that someone who steals from medicine pills meant for ordinary people would not hesitate to commit any act of corruption.

He said that such acts of corruption continue to be carried out throughout different administrations.

Siyam said that the tax money collected from all Maldivian citizens must be used to protect their rights.

He concluded his speech with an emotional appeal to the government.

“Help the sick. Help the people in need. Fulfill the needs of the people. This is an urgent appeal to the government,” he said.

Siyam voiced confidence that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu cares for the people. And expressed hope he will do right by them in their hour of need.
