Police are investigating a man in a trusted position for allegedly sexually assaulting a woman repeatedly since her childhood on an island in the north.

Police said on Sunday that the case involves the alleged long‑term sexual assault of an 18‑year‑old woman by a man who held a position of trust. The incident was reported on Saturday afternoon.

Police said the case is being investigated by North Police in coordination with relevant agencies.

Reports of sexual offences, including child sexual abuse, have been rising in the Maldives. According to police statistics, 41 cases of sexual offences have been reported so far this year. Authorities have long noted that many such crimes go unreported, despite increasing awareness and reporting mechanisms.
