The uninhabited island Ungulu in Raa Atoll has been brought under the jurisdiction of Ungoofaaru, following a decision by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, the President’s Office has confirmed on Thursday.

The move comes after Ungoofaaru residents requested an uninhabited island to support various industrial and economic activities planned for the island.

During a visit to Ungoofaaru on March 3, 2024, President Muizzu said he would verify whether Ungulu had been allocated to any party or if any related cases were pending in court. He assured residents that the government would work to meet their request.

The President has also stated that Ungoofaaru will be developed as one of the government’s designated urban centres, with Ungulu expected to play a role in supporting that development.
