The price of chilis produced in Th. Kandoodhoo, a staple in Maldivian cuisine, has gone down in the Male’ market, after shooting up ahead of Ramadan.
Kandoodhoo chilis were available on Sunday from both the local market and the traveler’s market in Male’ for between MVR 25 – MVR 30 per 100 grams, and between MVR 230 – MVR 280 per kilo.
This marks a significant price drop from what it was at the beginning of Ramadan.
When the holy month began, Kandoodhoo chilis were prices between MVR 40 – MVR 45 per grams, and MVR 380 – MVR 430 per kilo.
Some stalls even sold it for a steep MVR 450 per kilo.
Vendors attribute the price drop to an increase in chili supplies from the atolls, especially from Kandoodhoo – helping cover the supply shortage at the start of Ramadan.
Meanwhile, the price of certain fruits such as watermelon, popular for making beverages during Ramadan, has dropped slightly. However, the price of other produce such as lime remains high.
