President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has inaugurated Masjid Yoosuf Al Barbaree (Barbaree Mosque) in conjunction with the Asr prayer this afternoon.
The President was accompanied by the Minister of Islamic Affairs, Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed, as well as senior government officials and members of the public. Following the official inauguration, he toured the mosque’s premises and participated in the congregational Asr prayer.
The mosque was commissioned to a private developer and constructed as a contemporary three-storey building designed to accommodate 1,400 worshippers.
Barbaree Mosque, located in a prominent area in Male’, has historically served a large number of congregants.
On January 25, 2024, the Ministry of Islamic Affairs signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with a private party to develop a new mosque at the site of Masjid Yoosuf Al Barbaree. Formal construction began in 2025.
Completed within one year, the Barbaree Mosque is a three-storey structure, with interiors featuring Islamic architectural elements and intricate decorative designs.
Expanding prayer capacity across the Maldives remains a key government priority, with many mosques scheduled to open this year. Several have already been inaugurated ahead of Ramadan, while work on numerous other mosque projects continues nationwide.
