Man receives life sentence over drugs found in cigarette pack

A man from HDh. Finey has received the life sentence for trafficking diamorphine or heroin.

Adnan Mohamed was stopped and searched by the police based on an intel report in August 2023 as he was travelling with a companion in a taxi along the Boduthakurufaanu Magu of Male’ City.

During their search, the police found drugs hidden inside a juice patty packet in a cigarette pack he was carrying.

The charge against Adnan was filed with the magistrate court in K. Gulhi.

Court documents show the first attorney Adnan hired recused themselves during closing arguments. He was given the opportunity to hire replacement, who failed to show up at court.

The case was therefore decided without legal representation present for Adnan.

The court found Adnan guilty of drug trafficking and issued a life sentence of 25 years and imposed an MVR 100,000 fine – which he is required to settle within one year.

Given the time he has already spent in detention, he has 24 years, 10 months and 17 days left to serve.
