The price of chilis produced in Th. Kandoodhoo, a staple in Maldivian cuisine, has shot up by nearly double what it was just a few days ago, with less than a week left until the month of Ramadan.

It is common for the price of Kandoodhoo chili to shoot up during Ramadan, as the demand for the popular hot pepper surpasses the supply.

On Thursday, a kilo of Kandhoodhoo chili was available from the Male’ local market for MVR 430 – MVR 480.

The price was between MVR 250 and MVR 280 just three days ago, and MVR 120 a month back.

A vendor at the Male’ market told Sun that there has been a significant rise in demand for Kandhoodhoo chili since Wednesday, as boats travelling to the atolls purchase stocks of chili for sale during Ramadan.

He expects the demand to fall and the price to stabilize once Ramadan begins on Wednesday.

“The supply of Kandoodhoo chili is also low in the market. This is because this is the hot season, meaning chilis aren’t growing that well,” he said.

“But chili will be available during Ramadan.”

Kandoodhoo chilis, with its distinct hot flavor, are considered a staple in Maldivian cuisine. The demand for the chili usually grows in Ramadan, a month marked by a rise in consumption of food products.
