Probe launched into same day deaths of two inmates; autopsy to be conducted

Maldives Police Service, on Sunday, announced they have launched a probe into the deaths of two inmates who were serving their sentences in the custody of Maldives Correctional Service.

The two deaths were reported on February 2nd.

The Police, on Sunday, said they are investigating the deaths of Hassan Niyaz, 45, Dhiggaagasdhoshuge, S. Hithadhoo, who passed away while being treated at Hulhumale’ Hospital and Ibrahim Suhail, 53, Dhafthar No: DR439, who passed away while being treated at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) for pneumonia.

The authority also revealed that autopsies will be conducted on both individuals as part of the investigation, adding that arrangements are underway to transport the bodies abroad for this purpose.

At the time, the Maldives Correctional Service stated that Suhail died on February 2, one week after being admitted to IGMH due to a deterioration in his health condition. The authority added that he developed pneumonia while receiving treatment at the hospital.

According to Corrections, Suhail had been undergoing medical care following a stroke he suffered last year.

Meanwhile, Corrections said Niyaz experienced a sudden medical emergency on the afternoon of February 2 and was transferred to Hulhumale’ Hospital at 13:30pm. The authority added that doctors later confirmed his death at 14:05pm.
