A protest was held near Cristóbal Colón, the dredger engaged in Rasmale’ project prompted by anger over dredging near islands from reclamation of Fushidhiggaru Falhu lagoon under the project.
Approximately 20 speedboats participated in the protest near the dredger on Friday evening.
A youth who participated in the protest told Sun that the reef and marine life are being adversely impacted due to dredging near Maafushi. The protestors are therewith demanding the immediate cessation of dredging near islands for Rasmale’ reclamation.
The protestors in speedboats surrounded the dredger engaged in Rasmale’ project with posters expressing their sentiments. In this regard, they underscored the importance of safeguarding marine habitats for the livelihood of Maldivians.
Notably, the protest follows concerns recently raised by former President Mohamed Nasheed regarding the Rasmale’ reclamation project. Nasheed highlighted worries about sand and mud being discharged from the reclamation site and the potential damage this could cause to the surrounding reef.
However, he acknowledged that the project is crucial for Maldives’ development.
Nevertheless, he emphasized the importance of adhering to regulations set forth by the government on land reclamation and issues highlighted in the Environment Impact Assessment.
The Rasmale' project, launched on December 18, 2023, aims to reclaim 1,153 hectares in K. Fushidhiggaru Lagoon to develop 65,000 housing units. The first 15,000 units have already been awarded to a Chinese company.
While the project was initially scheduled for completion within eight months, progress has faced delays. The original agreement with Sri Lanka-based Capital Marine and Civil Construction Company (CMCCC) was later cancelled, as the government opted to proceed without granting land to the contractor.
Since then, the reclamation has been contracted to China’s China Railway Construction Corporation (CRCC).
