Addu City Mayor Ali Nizar boycotted a scheduled meeting with President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu on Wednesday, citing the lack of opportunity to raise key concerns affecting Addu residents.

Speaking to Sun, Nizar said he had intended to present pressing issues such as electricity shortages and road conditions, but chose not to attend after learning he would not be allowed to speak. “Even if we have different political views, we should have the opportunity to share the concerns of the people at the meeting with the President,” he said.

Nizar noted that council presidents from other islands had been given speaking time during similar meetings, and that he had actively participated in preparatory events ahead of the President’s visit to Addu.

He added that the Addu City Council had proposed alternative solutions to the region’s electricity problems, and that the President had expressed willingness to act on several council recommendations.

This is not the first time a local leader has walked out over lack of engagement. During the President’s southern tour in late September, Kinbidhoo Council President Ali Hussain left a meeting under similar circumstances. Fuvahmulah City Mayor Ismail Rafeeq was also reportedly denied a speaking slot during the President’s visit on Tuesday.

The incidents have sparked broader concerns about inclusivity and dialogue during high-level government visits to local constituencies.
